10 Bible Verses Every Overwhelmed Mom Needs to Read

As a mom of three children, I know all too well the feeling of overwhelm, literally keeping my head above water on my hardest days. Often, a mountain of laundry that I can never seem to conquer, and the endless chores of sweeping up Cheerios off the floor, mopping muddy floors, and scrubbing the hands of my toddler, who has once again gotten into the candy bag in our pantry.

Overwhelm in motherhood is sometimes an understatement; we often feel the weight of keeping our households running smoothly while caring for our husbands and ourselves. In our modern society, having a maidservant like it is mentioned in the Proverbs 31 chapter, describing the virtuous woman, it almost seems non-existent for the everyday woman, because we often find ourselves doing it alone. It almost feels unbearable at times. I know I’ve questioned God, “Are you sure you equipped me to do this?”

Yet, this issue is not isolated to my own experience, but so many moms I have counseled have encountered the same, and they often get discouraged if they are indeed a “good mom.” Moms are struggling with overwhelm, inadequacy, and the perfectionistic disease that often runs rampant when we compare ourselves to other public figures on Instagram and social media in general.

I must admit, I still struggle in this area, and as a mother for the past nine years, I am just now learning that overwhelm comes from a place of relying too much on myself and not enough on the One who speaks to us and says, “My Strength is made perfect in your weakness.”

These are the soft whispers of the Holy Spirit to remind me in my hardest days that He never created me to carry this weight alone, in fact, the pressure I put on myself doesn’t come from Him, it comes from a culture that loudly declares that moms need to do it all, we need to carry the load and do so cheerfully without help because we are the “super-she-roes” in the family, super human, super mom that can endure it all.

Can I share with you that this is a lie? This is the lie that is spoken in our society, and it is a lie that should be exposed, for the sake of women leaning into the truth of what God’s word says about them and their role as a mother and a wife. Dear sister, please lean into the Father and His word, read these 10 scriptures, and memorize at least 1-2 to help you on your hardest days, those days of overwhelm, where you feel like you are drowning. Mark them on your heart and keep these words wherever you go.

Here are 10 sobering scriptures to encourage you on your hardest days:

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
